Is the goal to let everything go?

Yes, although the idea of letting go needs to be understood in the right way. It is not about relinquishing possessions, achievements, relationships, or reputation. It is not even about relinquishing thoughts and negative emotions. It is about awareness letting go of its identification with all these things and primarily with the sense of ‘I’ behind them. When that happens, everything drops away by itself. You don’t actually let them go. They drop away of their own accord because there is no longer any identification holding them. Nisargadatta said it beautifully: “The world is made of rings. The hooks are all yours. Unbend your hooks.” But he was not talking to the four centers of the mind and body when he said this. He was talking to awareness.
